The World Serpent
Jörmungandr
Jormungandr, also known as the Midgard Serpent or World Serpent, is one of the most iconic figures in Norse mythology. This enormous serpent, said to be so large that it encircles the Earth, plays a crucial role in the mythological narratives that define the Norse cosmos. Jormungandr’s significance extends beyond mere folklore; it embodies themes of chaos, destruction, and the cyclical nature of existence. This article aims to explore Jormungandr’s significance in Norse mythology, its various interpretations, and how it compares to mythological serpents from other cultures. The universe of Norse mythology had nine realms. These were all held on the branches of the tree called Yggdrasil. In the stories of Norse mythology, the Jörmungandr, which means “great monster” in Norse culture, was the son of Loki, the Trickster, and Angrboda, who were Jotunn, or giants.
